Reward for Good Deed

One year, there was an awful drought and no sign of rain in the forecast. The Jews of the city decided to fast and gathered in shuls to pray for rain, but not even one small cloud appeared in the sky. They returned home depressed, including the Rav of the city. The Rav decided to do a 'question dream' and was told thru a dream that in a specific city lives a Jew and if he'll pray for rain, heaven will immediately open the skies with plentiful rain.

The following morning, the Rav gathered the scholars of the city and told them the dream. They organized 2 scholars to go into this city and find the Jew and have him pray for rain. When they arrived in the city, people wondered why Torah scholars are searching for a drunken man. The people of the city warned them that it's not worth going to him but the scholars insisted. Finally, they were given directions to his house. When the wife opened the door of the house, she told them that it's not an easy task to speak to her husband because when he's not drinking, he's sleeping. The family prepares a bottle of wine for him and when he wakes up, they bring it to him and then he immediately falls asleep.

The 2 scholars insisted to see the Jew and took with them the bottle of wine that the family prepared. When the wife showed them to his bedroom, they saw the drunkard in a deep sleep and snoring loudly. They sat by his bed waiting for him to wake up. A few hours passed and finally, the drunkard woke up. As soon as he woke up, he yelled, "give me my bottle." The scholars said that if he wants his wine bottle he must say, "May it be the Will of HaShem that rain will fall in the city of ...". The drunkard agreed and said it. They gave him the bottle of wine and in less than 3 minutes, the wine was down the drunkard's throat and he fell asleep, again.

They wrote down the time when he said the prayer for rain and returned to their city. When they returned to their city, they saw it like Gan Eden, grass and trees were green, flowers blooming, and beautiful rain was washing the city. They went directly to their Rav's home and told him the exact time the man asked HaShem for rain. The Rav also wrote down the exact time the rain began and all were shocked that it was the exact time the drunkard prayed for rain. The scholars told the Rav that the drunkard hasn't left his house in 2 years and in-between drinking, he only sleeps.

That evening, the Rav did another question dream to find out who this Jew is and why anything that is decreed out of his throat, is immediatly accepted by Shamayim.

That night Shamayim revealed to him that this Jew used to buy and sell used clothing and would go from city to city to make profits. One time he was in the capital city, near the palace of the widow queen and when the queen saw him, she lusted for him. She called him into the palace and made believe she was interested in his stock and purchased everything. She told him that she also has clothing for sale and he should follow her to see them so he can resell it and make lots of money. The Jew agreed but told her that he can only purchase according to the amount of money that he has in in pocket.

She asked him why must he work so hard for money when she has a much better offer for him, to be a minister in her kingdom and live at the palace. "But," she said, "On one condition. You must fulfill my requests in other areas too." "If you like me," replied the Jew, "I'm ready to marry you and we'll be husband and wife and not behave like animals. Make an announcement that in 2 weeks we are getting married and in the meantime, introduce me to your people and when we get married, everything will be ok". The queen immediately agreed and the wedding date was set. She ordered the kitchen to prepare food for her lavish wedding, the seamstress for her wedding gown, the tailor to prepare clothing for her groom, etc. She introduced him to the people in the palace and its ministers as the future king and told them from now on, they must take orders from him.

She arranged for 2 ministers to take him around the city for the common people to see him and for him, to get familiar with the city. When they passed by a prison, he asked to go inside the prison to see the prisoners. He saw that most prisoners were Jews and were placed in prison because they were Jews. He gave an order to open the gates of the prison and release all the prisoners immediately because today is an happy day for him, for he will be marrying the queen. All the prisoners were released that day...

When he returned to the palace, he took money and distributed it to the poor people of the city, especially to the Jews whom got more than everyone else. Everyone loved their soon-to-be-king and blessed the queen for marrying an humble man. This caused the queen to fall in love with him even more.

2 days prior to their wedding, he found the clothing that he originally wore when he arrived into this city and late at night, he sneaked out of the palace. He told the guard that he is going to wash himself in the river and will return within 2 hours. At the river, he removed his royal clothing and left it by the river so when it will be found, they will think that he drowned. He changed into his original clothing and fled home, to his wife and children.

In Shamayim, there was so much pleasure from this Jew whom gave up the kingdom, avoided uniting with a non-Jew, released Jewish prisoners, and gave charity to Jews. It was decreed that anything that will come out of his mouth, will be fulfilled.

The Malachaim came before HKB'H and said, "Ribbono Shel Olam, we know that each person gets rewarded for good deeds that one does but this man received a tremendeous reward and can change the destiny of the world that was created from the 6 day of creations. If he'll say, 'Moshiach come right now', Moshiach will have to redeem Am Israel immediately, before his due time." HKB'H answered them, "From now on, this man will depend only on wine and will speak very little. He will spend the rest of his life in bed, sleeping, in-between drinking."

This dream was bestowed on the Rav thru a dream from Shamayim. The following morning he called all the scholars of the city and prepared a big thankgiving meal. He told them the dream and how HKB'H is so merciful and rewards all people, whether they did something good that is big or small.
