Heaven's Secrets

Eliyahu HaNavi, zachur latov, used to frequent Rebbi's shul (R' Yehudah HaNasi, zs'l). Once he arrived late and upon his arrival, Rebbi asked him the reason for his delay. Eliyahu Hanavi answered, "I was delayed by his having had to arouse Avraham Avinu, then Yitzchak Avinu and then Ya'akov Avinu, a'h, and to wash their hands for prayers one after the other."

Rebbi askd him why he didn't do it for all the Forefathers simultaneously. Eliyahu Hanavi replied that he if the Avot would make a joint effort in prayer, thru their Tefilot, they can bring Moshiach prematurely.

Rebbi asked him whether there was not a way to bring Moshiach prematurely in this world and Eliyahu HaNavi replied that there was, Rebbi Chiya and his sons, zs'l.

A while later, there was a drought. Rebbi decreed a public fast and appointed Rebbi Chiya as the Chazan, together with his two sons.

When Rebbi Chiya and his sons said ...
'Mashiv ha'Ruach' - the wind began to blow.
'Morid ha'Gashem' - it began to rain.

When Rebbi Chiya and his sons were about to recite 'Mechaye ha'Meitim' (resurrect the dead), the earth and heaven began to shake, all neshamot were very excited in anticipation to be revived. But before they managed to complete the blessing, an apparition in the shape of bear of fire appeared from the nearby forest, and the frightened congregation fled from the shul.

In heaven, it was asked, "Who revealed the secrets of Shamayim to the lower world? Who revealed that the prayers of Rebbi Chiya and his sons are accepted like the prayers of the Forefathers?." They answered, "Eliyahu HaNavi."

By telling Rebbi how to bring about Techiyat hameitim before due time, Eliyahu Hanavi received sixty lashes with flashes of lightning - for divulging Heaven's secrets.
