Chevlei Moshiach are the "birth pangs" prior to the redemption. The arrival of the Moshiach is similar to a woman giving birth. Before Moshiach Tzidkeinu comes there will be trials and tribulations. Similarly, before a woman gives birth there are certain birth pangs.
