יתמו חטאים מן הארץ ורשעים עוד אינם ברכי נפשי את ה' הללויה
"Sins shall cease (not the sinners), from the earth, by which means the wicked will be no more.”
If a holy Sefer Torah רחמנא ליצלן (HaShem save us) falls on the floor, all who witness this event must fast 40 days. [+/-] show/hide text
Other rabbis have suggested alternatives, including giving money to tzedakah (social justice causes), buying a new Torah mantle, reciting psalms, or learning the laws related to the Sefer Torah.
The tradition of fasting 40 days, equal to the 40 in which the Torah was given, helps us atone. The responsibility of fasting falls on everyone who was present at the time. This fast is less strict than other fast days. It does not have to be 40 days in a row and is done only during daylight hours. In addition to the fast, people normally give tzadakah. These acts of fasting and charity remind us of the Sefer Torah's holiness and the respect it deserves.
In NYS, without mentioning the city's name, during the High Holidays 5767, holy Torah scrolls fell to the ground in 4 different synagogues, 4 times.
It says that if the Holy Torah falls down, it is because the Jews fail to uphold its laws and values, and when Jewish leadership falters in its obligation to raise the Torah aloft.
It is the responsibility of the Rabbis, educators and Judges of every generation to see to it that the earthly Court, the guardians of G-d's Torah on earth below, must help every Jew understand the loving embrace of Torah, the profound wisdom of Torah, the timeliness and timelessness of Torah.
When Moshe Rabbenu zs'l, saw the Jews serving the golden calf, he cast the Torah to the ground and caused the Tablets to break; he realized that as Israel's shepherd, he had caused the Torah to fall if the Jews departed from its ways as soon as his physical presence left them for forty days.
